Curtis Jones has told Liverpool’s website that he does not see the new signing Fabio Carvalho as competition, but more of a teammate. He believes the duo can help eachother in the coming months and years.
Carvalho, 19, has joined Liverpool after a wonderful 2021-22 campaign. Coming into last season with just six senior appearances to his name – the playmaker had a hand in 19 goals during 38 games as Fulham won the Championship.
The Reds have moved quickly to bring him in, after coming very close in January. He has a contract at Anfield until the summer of 2027 – joining other recruits in Darwin Nunez and Calvin Ramsay.

- Robin Koch an unsung hero at right-back in Leeds’ final games of 21/22
Jones, who was a bit-part player at Liverpool last season, was asked about the signing of Carvalho. While he admits that the two are similar players and will be competing, he sees themselves as teammates that can help eachother.
“It’s competition in midfield but I don’t see it as that. I see him more as a teammate. Kind of I help him and he helps me and then Hendo helps us or Thiago helps us. It’s competition but it’s like a friendly thing.
There’s no sort of, ‘Ah, he’s playing and I’m not and then I need to completely push him out of the way.’ You want to go out there and go and play, but I think the competition is alright and it’s just a teammate thing.”
Jones does not see new Liverpool signing Carvalho as competition
Will Carvalho’s arrival reduce Jones’ game time? Arguably not, given Liverpool have just sold Takumi Minamino. Both Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita are being linked with moves this summer.
The latter duo are in the final 12 months of their contracts at Anfield. If the Reds want cash for the duo, they will need to be sold this summer. Carvalho’s versatility means he will give Jones something to think about.
