Derby County defender Curtis Davies has urged the Aston Villa players to ‘worry about doing well’ and get the club ‘back to the Premier League’.
The 33-year-old spent a number of years at Villa Park during the mid-to-late noughties and waxed-lyrical about his time at the then-top-six Premier League side.
He admitted that putting on the Villa shirt was an ‘incredible feeling’, but sent a message to the players regarding their current status as they aim for promotion back to the promised land.
“It’s a massive club,” Davies told Sky Sports Football on 08/02/2019. “In my time here, we finished in the top six every year in the Premier League.
“Coming from Luton to West Brom was a massive step, but even stepping from West Brom to Aston Villa [was big]. When you step into this stadium and there are 45,000 baying for the blood of the opponents, it’s massive.
“To put on that shirt on is an incredible thing, but the lads out there can’t worry about that too much, they are in the Championship right now. They need to worry about doing well and get themselves back to the Premier League where this club belongs.”

Centre-back Davies played for Villa when they were batting for Champions League football under Martin O’Neill prior to their relegation to the Championship many years later.
Nonetheless, during their recent league outing, Villa recorded a stunning 3-3 draw at home to automatic-chasers Sheffield United, who were 3-0 up going into the last 10 minutes of the encounter.
The home side looked dead and buried but somehow they managed to rescue a point in stoppage-time with winger Andre Green scoring a late headed goal.
At this moment in time, Dean Smith’s side six points behind sixth-placed Bristol City, who currently occupy the final playoff spot and have a game in hand on some of their rivals.
As for Davies’ Derby County side, they are also six points ahead of Villa, but they are currently sitting one place outside of the top six as they aim for back-to-back top-six finishes.
