Arsenal fans have been left baffled by Gareth Southgate’s decision to bring on Bukayo Saka in a right-wing back berth last night.

Another cap for Saka

Saka was introduced yesterday evening as England searched for their winner against Hungary in what proved to be a controversial change.

The Arsenal youngster was brought on for Jack Grealish, as Southgate reshuffled his formation.

Saka was then stationed in what looked to be a right-wing back position.

The Arsenal man was asked to play high and wide, as he looked to stretch what was a well drilled Hungarian defence.

Unfortunately for Southgate the plan didn’t work to any great effect, with Saka failing to have much of an impact after being introduced.

And Arsenal fans were confused with their teenaged star wasn’t given a more attacking role after coming on.

Versatility a strength

Saka’s versatility is, of course, one of his key strengths – but he may have been better utilised in a more attacking role yesterday.

He has become one of Arsenal’s most important forward players in recent years, due to the quality that he can provide from out wide.

England’s display against Hungary was far from their best, with the Three Lions struggling to break down a resolute backline throughout.

Ollie Watkins had England’s best chance to score a winner after Saka’s introduction, but his volley was ultimately tame.
