Penalties earned and fouls in final third – Who features along with Liverpool stars?

The speedy Liverpool attack that has almost double the penalties of their nearest rival ensures their presence on this list, but alongside who else?

Last weekend, Liverpool benefitted from receiving two penalties to vanquish West Ham United 2-1. Without either penalty, they would have been defeated and possibly, a long way off their leading position at the head of the Premier League.

They were the eleventh and twelfth penalties of their Premier League season, five more than any other team, and was the second time they had been awarded two penalties or more this season, with the other being the now famous 3-0 win at Old Trafford that actually saw them awarded three.

Below we look at the Premier League’s most successful penalty earners, as well as a broader look at the players that have earned the most fouls in the final third.

Penalties won

It’s no surprise that both Raheem Sterling and Luis Suarez top the list, given their skilful, swift tendency to head into opposition areas. Of the nine players that have won more than one pen, three are from the Reds, with Daniel Sturridge also contributing two. Of the contributions give the amount of minutes played, Sterling ranks highest of the Liverpool contingent. Elsewhere, Edin Dzeko, Samuel Etoo and Alex Kacaniklic have even stronger records in this respect.

Fouls on player in final third

Suarez is the clear leader in this department, with 35 fouls on him in the offensive third, 5 more than any other player. Eden Hazard and Adnan Januzaj are tied on 30 fouls, unsurprising given that Hazard has the most fouls on him in the entire league. Januzaj’s fouls against are hugely impressive given his very limited minutes on the pitch – they work out at roughly a foul every half of football he has played. Sturridge also features on the list for Liverpool, although it is another Merseyside man whose entry is significant on this list of ten – with Leighton Baines having an outstanding total of final third fouls on him considering the fact he is a defender.
