Why Hernandez should pick Leeds over CSKA

Abel Hernandez is reportedly interesting CSKA Moscow and Leeds.

The Yorkshire Evening Post have reported that Russian Premier League giants CSKA Moscow have joined the race to sign free agent Abel Hernandez, but the centre-forward should still pick Leeds United.

The Whites remain interested in the 27-year-old forward, who saw his contract at Championship rivals Hull City expire at the end of the 2017-18 season after making only 10 appearances last season.

A cruciate ligament injury prevented the 29-time Uruguay international from making a real mark on Hull’s side, as Nigel Adkins’ side fought against Championship relegation. He still scored eight goals in that time, though.

Now a free agent, Leeds are said to be keen but are holding off on completing a deal as they continue to pursue a move to sign Derby County’s Matej Vydra – with Marcelo Bielsa said to prefer the latter.

But with Leeds making a move to sign Czech Republic international Vydra last month, it remains to be seen if a move will be completed as it continues to drag out. If Leeds do indeed move for Hernandez, he should choose the Whites over CSKA.

That is because the Russian outfit boast strikers such as Brazilian star Vitinho, as well as wonderkid Fedor Chalov, who at the age of just 20, scored seven goals last term including a hat-trick against Arsenal Tula.

The latter also scored against Arsenal in the Europa League last term and both forwards are well regarded at CSKA. Hernandez would struggle to earn the title as first-choice striker if he was to move to Russia.

However, at Leeds, Hernandez would be head and shoulders above the rest of Leeds’ forwards, who are yet to properly replace the loss of Chris Wood. Pierre-Michel Lasogga tried and failed last term, while Caleb Ekuban managed just two goals.

Surely, then, if Hernandez has offers from Leeds and CSKA to choose from, he should pick a move to remain in England’s second tier in order to be made first choice rather than a fringe player.
