Premier League high-flyers Crystal Palace reportedly wanted Athletic Bilbao’s Unai Nunez – now so do Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

Cast your mind back to the January transfer window.

Nine months ago, Crystal Palace were scouring the Spanish market for potential additions and, according to AS, the Eagles felt that they had discovered a potential gem of a centre-back with the world at his feet.

Unai Nunez, at just 21, was making a real name for himself at Athletic Bilbao. But with a £26 million release clause in his contract, Palace had no option but to wave this deal goodbye.

Though with the benefit of hindsight, maybe it was worth taking a punt on a player who, at the time, had made just 45 senior appearances.

Because, with just two months remaining until the January transfer window swings open once again, Goal claims that Nunez is catching the eye of one of the world’s biggest and best clubs these days – none other than Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

Niko Kovac the head coach

The report says that talks are already underway between Bayern and Nunez’s representatives and, with star centre-back Niklas Sule out for some time with a cruciate ligament injury, there is a real chance that Nunez could be wearing the famous red shirt in the new year.

The now-22-year-old is still yet to really establish himself as a first-team regular at Athletic but, with a maiden Spain cap under his belt and an almost faultless performance in August’s 1-0 triumph over Barcelona, Nunez has shown that he possesses the talent worthy of the elite level.

Oh well Crystal Palace, at least you’ve still got James Tomkins.
