Long-term Newcastle target Andros Townsend spoke exclusively to Sky Sports about his future, and insisted that he plans to stay with Crystal Palace for many years to come.

The Telegraph ran a report last month stating that the Magpies were interested in signing the 27-year-old winger, with a potential £18 million switch being mooted.

Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez has been fairly open with his frustration at his side’s lack of transfer activity this summer, and it seems as though he is set to face further disappointment in his chase for Townsend.

The Crystal Palace winger spoke exclusively to Sky Sports, and insisted that he has no interest in moving to Newcastle this summer:

“I have got three years left on my contract. The club want me here, the fans want me here, I want to be here, so for me there is nothing to it [speculation linking him with a return to Newcastle]. There is always gossip surrounding myself every summer but I don’t really pay much attention to it. I’m happy here and hopefully I can be here for many years.”

Andros Townsend of Crystal Palace looks on during the Premier League match between Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur at Selhurst Park on April 26, 2017 in London, England.

Townsend has, of course, played for Newcastle before, having spent six months at St James’ Park in 2016, but is seems unlikely that he will be returning, judging by his latest comments.

The Toon do need to bolster their ranks in the attacking department before the start of the new season, however, if they are to make genuine progress this season.

Quite who Rafa will bring to Newcastle, though, remains to be seen.
