Crystal Palace are the latest club, after West Ham United, to have their name associated with that of Rafa Benitez, the Newcastle United manager.

Speculation is growing that Benitez could quit St James’ Park after a frustrating transfer window, which culminated in £200,000-a-week’s worth of Magpies players moved on to accommodate signings that never arrived, The Northern Echo reported last week.

West Ham were the first to be credited with interest in the Spaniard, whose side inflicted a third Premier League defeat out of three for the London side last time out, to leave Slaven Bilic under even more pressure.

According to The Northern Echo, Benitez would have to pay £6 million to break his contract with Newcastle, and it is claimed West Ham would be willing to cover that cost.

But it would appear that Crystal Palace would not, with The Daily Mail suggesting Benitez would be “too expensive prise from Newcastle”.

It is claimed that Frank de Boer, the Palace manager, could find himself out of work even before Sunday’s trip to Burnley, after also losing every single league game this season.

But it is Roy Hodgson, the former England boss, and not Benitez who is favourite to succeed the Dutchman at Selhurst Park, The Daily Mail reports.
