Crystal Palace striker Connor Wickham questions whether James Forrest’s goal against Hearts should have stood.
Celtic managed to begin the defence of their Scottish Premier League title with a hard fought 2-1 victory over Heart of Midlothian at the Tynecastle Stadium in Edinburgh and it was a late strike from new signing Scott Sinclair which helped the Hoops earn the three points on the day.
Apart from the dramatic end to the game, the match was full of controversies and in particular, Jamie Walker diving inside the box to con the referee into giving a penalty in the 36th minute of the game incensed the Celtic faithful.
While the defending Scottish champions would have felt a sense of justice after grabbing the late winner, Crystal Palace striker Connor Wickham has raised the question as to whether the Hoops’ themselves benefited from a contentious decision.
James Forrest scored the goal for Celtic on the eighth minute, expertly guiding the ball into the far bottom corner from outside the box and at first glance, it seemed like a wonderful goal.
However, replays clearly showed that Celtic’s Stuart Armstrong had interfered in the line of sight of Hearts goalkeeper Jack Hamilton and according to FIFA’s Law 11, the strike from Forrest should not have stood.
Palace star Wickham was following the game closely and he took to social media website, Twitter, to pose the question regarding whether the opening goal should have been ruled out for offside.
He posted,
In response, many fans stated that the goal should have been chalked off and Celtic could most certainly consider themselves a bit fortunate.
