Former Crystal Palace loanee Timothy Fosu-Mensah was touted for a big future at Old Trafford but Manchester United’s recent business suggests otherwise.
Timothy Fosu-Mensah was touted as a future star at Manchester United, but after a bit-part debut campaign with the Red Devils and a season-long loan, further business looks to have damaged the player’s chances of breaking through at Old Trafford.
The 20-year-old was sent to Crystal Palace last term, where he plied his trade predominantly from right-back, although the player claims his best position is in defensive midfield.
He enjoyed a relatively successful season with the Eagles, making 24 appearances in all competitions, but there is no doubting the Dutchman has more potential than he has currently shown and, given more time, he could become a serious asset in England’s top flight.
However, Jose Mourinho is under pressure to deliver titles at United in his third year, and the additions of Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred (Sky Sports) and Porto right-back Diogo Dalot (Sky Sports), suggest Fosu-Mensah is not at the forefront of his plans.
At the ages of 25 and 19 respectively, it is safe to assume Fosu-Mensah is unlikely to break into the first-team any time soon and must begin to consider other options.
Palace could offer him a great place to grow and achieve his immense promise, despite Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s breakthrough late in the season, competition is healthy.
The Eagles need quality reinforcements this summer after releasing Joel Ward and another move for the talented Dutchman would be a risk-free step in the right direction.
Fosu-Mensah is versatile enough to play at right-back, centre-back or holding midfield but all three of those positions may be even tougher to break into at United come next season, meaning a return to Palace may be an attractive alternative.
