Newcastle reportedly wanted Papa Souare back in January.

The Guardian have claimed in their live transfer blog (Tuesday, 13:16pm) that Crystal Palace left-back Pape Souare could leave Selhurst Park before Thursday’s 5pm deadline – and Newcastle United have got to move.

The 28-year-old has plummeted down the pecking order under Roy Hodgson, managing just four appearances throughout the entire 2017-18 campaign despite returning to fitness follow a car accident at the start of the season.

Patrick van Aanholt remains first choice on the left side of defence and the former Chelsea defender has not given Senegal international Souare a sniff.

Now, the 28-year-old could be allowed to leave Palace and that may place Newcastle on red alert, after they were interested in buying the former Lille defender in January, according to Sky Sports.

It is believed Newcastle are after a left-back, with the club currently in talks to sign Paris Saint-Germain defender Stanley N’Soko as well as being priced out of a move for Bristol City’s Joe Bryan.

With less than 12 months remaining on his contract and way down in Hodsgon’s thinking, Souare is likely to be allowed to leave on the cheap and that would suit Newcastle.

Paul Dummett has remained largely unconvincing on the left side of defence and has little cover. Signing Souare would ease Benitez’s concerns over the left side of defence, and give Wales international Dummett some competition.
