History is repeating itself at Stamford Bridge and the reaction from Chelsea supporters is mainly one of resignation and disappointment.
After watching in horror as Tariq Lamptey blossomed into one of the Premier League’s most exciting full-backs on the South Coast, his price tag soaring from £4 million to £30 million in the blink of an eye, Chelsea then allowed Fikayo Tomori to join AC Milan while deciding to keep the unconvincing Kurt Zouma on the books.
The fact Milan had no qualms about paying £28 million to turn Tomori’s loan deal into a permanent transfer after just six months at the San Siro should tell you everything you need to know about how the England international adapted to life in Italy.
And with Marc Guehi set to sign a five-year deal at Crystal Palace, concerns are growing that another highly talented centre-back is heading out the door without being given a run of games at the heart of the Chelsea back line (Athletic).

Crystal Palace swoop for Guehi – and some Chelsea fans aren’t happy
On one hand, bringing in £15 million to £20 million for someone who has only ever played two EFL Cup games in Chelsea colours is brilliant business – especially with the Blues looking to raise funds for Erling Haaland or Federico Chiesa.
On the other, many in west London would swap Zouma for Guehi in an instant, especially after the England U21 starlet impressed during two seasons on loan at Swansea City.
Thiago Silva, meanwhile, is hardly a long-term option at the age of 36 while doubts persist over whether Andreas Christensen can build on a super run of form en route to Champions League glory.
Selling Guehi, then, is already looking like another controversial decision made by an opinion-splitting board.
Here’s what some Chelsea fans had to say about the Guehi situation on Twitter:
