Crystal Palace fans have been left infuriated on Twitter after watching Patrick van Aanholt’s performance in the Eagles’ Carabao Cup clash with Bristol City on Tuesday night.

It looked like it was going to be a good night for Roy Hodgson’s men with Bakary Sako giving the Premier League strugglers the lead during the first-half at Ashton Gate.

However, it became all too familiar story for the long-suffering Palace fans as the Championship outfit strolled to a 4-1 win, with van Aanholt playing a crucial role in the Robins’ success.

City’s first goal came from his hapless attempts to clear the ball. The defender initially took an air shot before trying to head the ball back to Wayne Hennessey, only to tamely play it into Matty Taylor’s path, handing the Bristol City striker the perfect opportunity to bag the equaliser.

It was also the full-back who gave the ball away in the move that led to City’s third – which came from a stunning strike from Joe Bryan.

Unsurprisingly, the Crystal Palace fans who took to social media following the defeat were not pleased in the slightest with van Aanholt’s awful display, while a couple of Sunderland fans expressed their disbelief at the fact that they managed to get £14 million (via Sky Sports) for him back in January.

Here is the best of the reaction…
