Crystal Palace are reportedly interested in Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez, who was a target for Tottenham last year.

According to the Sun, the Eagles have set their sights on the Mexican international, who has had his best season in Europe to date with the Dutch giants as Alvarez and Ajax have dominated in both the UEFA Champions League and the Eredivisie.

Alvarez featured in all but one of Ajax’s Champions League group stage matches as the Netherlands titans won every single game to progress to the Round of 16, with the Mexican starring in the defensive midfield role.

As per the report, Palace are willing to meet Ajax’s £20m valuation for Alvarez, with Patrick Vieira’s side hopeful that rival clubs continue to overlook the midfielder ahead of the summer transfer window.

The south Londoners aren’t the only Premier League club to be linked with Alvarez, though. De Telegraaf reported in January 2021 that Tottenham were hot on the trail for the 24-year-old, however, no move ever materialised as the Mexican remained in Amsterdam.

Indeed, the midfielder has gone from strength to strength since Tottenham’s interest, and for Palace, they could now have a golden chance to sign Alvarez ahead of some big-name clubs if they beat the queue for the former Club America star.

Vieira has done well since taking the Palace job and has a clear vision to make the squad more dynamic and to bring the average age of the squad down a few pegs, and signing Alvarez will achieve both objectives and then some.

The Ajax star has been outstanding for the European giants this season, and for Palace, Alvarez has the quality and experience to raise the Eagles midfield to a whole new level under the management of Vieira.
