Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter to react after the club announced that Yoshinori Muto’s contract had been terminated by mutual consent.

What’s the story?

Well, the 29-year-old had one year left on his contract, but the Magpies and the player himself have decided to go their separate ways early.

Muto hasn’t played for Newcastle since July 2020, after spending the 2020/21 season on loan at Eibar in La Liga.

Even when he was on Tyneside, the 29-cap Japan international only made two Premier League starts during the 2019/20 season.

In 2018/19 – his debut season at Newcastle – Muto only made five Premier League starts.

Ever since Rafa Benitez brought him to St James’ Park, the former Mainz 05 forward has struggled to nail down a place in the starting XI.

Terrible business from Newcastle

It must be noted that Muto wasn’t exactly cheap, for the very little he offered to Newcastle.

Benitez spent £9.6m to sign the diminutive forward, and the Magpies have been paying him £54,000-a-week for the entirety of his contract.

To spend that much money, and only receive two goals in a total of 28 appearances, is an extremely poor return.

In fairness to Muto, he’s never really been treated too well.

The Japanese forward wasn’t given much of a chance to prove himself on Tyneside before being shipped to Eibar, in truth.

Let’s see how the Newcastle fans on Twitter reacted to the club’s announcement
