Peter Crouch and Alan Shearer were mightily impressed with Callum Wilson’s performance on Amazon Prime on Wednesday night as Newcastle held Liverpool to a goalless draw.
Given that it was the final game of 2020, it didn’t live up to the crazy-natured year, as Liverpool struggled to break Newcastle’s wall.
In the first half especially, Newcastle were trying to press their opponents high up the pitch, with Wilson a source to get the ball into Liverpool’s penalty area.
During Crouch’s half-time analysis, he stated that Wilson was causing Liverpool ‘all kinds of problems’, especially Nathaniel Philips before he and Shearer shared these views on the summer signing at full-time.
“With Callum, he will give you that run in-behind,” said Shearer. “He will give you the touch, go and move that all very good centre-forwards do. And he’ll also always give you a threat in and around the six-yard box.
Crouch added: “I was so impressed with him tonight. I think he’s a centre-forward, who can play up top on his own.
“He’s such a great outlet for defenders to play those balls down the sides because he’s just so quick, so strong and he’s got ability. His hold-up play is very good.”

Since Wilson’s £20 million move in the summer [BBC Sport], he has been a shining light for Newcastle and that number nine they have been looking for.
All the players that don that Newcastle shirt will inevitably be compared to a certain one-arm raising goalscoring machine, but that shouldn’t shy away from the job Wilson is doing this term.
Now it’s a simple case of Newcastle being more forward-thinking and the players around Wilson chipping in with goals to ease the burden on the former Bournemouth man.
