Garth Crooks has included Liverpool man Andy Robertson in his BBC Sport Team of the Week column – claiming the Reds defender has been through a “difficult period” this season, but praised his performance on Sunday afternoon.

Liverpool scored a whopping seven goals to hammer rivals Manchester United at Anfield. Only the fourth time the Red Devils have conceded seven goals in the top flight – the first time in 92 years. Liverpool were rampant in the second 45.

Cody Gakpo opened the scoring just before half-time, but Liverpool took it up a notch – or three – in the second half. Darwin Nunez, Mo Salah and Gakpo all got a brace, before Roberto Firmino came off the bench to make it seven.

Crooks included £160,000-a-week defender Robertson in his team of the week, following Sunday’s 7-0 win. He says the Scotland captain has been one of a number of Liverpool players struggling for form this term – but was excellent.

“There was a time when Robertson was getting into my team on a weekly basis. Since those days when Liverpool felt like they were winning everything, he has been through a difficult period and had to work hard to recapture his best.

“His constant raids down the right, his precision passing and quality balls into the area made you think he had never lost it. I don’t know who it was that said you don’t become a bad player overnight, but whoever it was, he was right.”

Every Liverpool player played out of their skin on Sunday. From Alisson, to Gakpo and Salah in the final third, the Reds were perfect. Manchester United had chances at 0-0 – Bruno Fernandes should have scored a header. But, a 7-0 win.

Luck did shine on Liverpool in the final third but they easily deserved to win the match by a considerable margin. The Reds, for once this term, were utterly clinical. Decision making, finishing and overall performance was absolutely there.
