Jamie Carragher has claimed that Liverpool shouldn’t be in a situation where James Milner is starting games and he added that is a ‘criticism of the club’ and not the player himself.

The 36-year-old has started three games for Liverpool this season, including his side’s 4-1 defeat to Napoli in the Champions League on Wednesday night, with Carragher highlighting the ‘problem’ of the club’s older players, as he told CBS Sports (07/09/22 at 10:20 pm).

Jurgen Klopp’s side seem to have lost their magic this term, with many questioning the performances of key players and whether the team can maintain the intensity levels their manager asks for.

A lack of refreshment to the squad, which was portrayed not only this summer, but last summer also, doesn’t help matters, nor do injuries to key players.

That’s why Klopp has to resort to players like 2015 free capture Milner and at times, playing him next to Jordan Henderson, who was on the bench in Naples.

Do Liverpool need a change because this squad of players can no longer match the levels asked of them? Well, if that’s the case, then Carragher made it clear that younger faces need to be brought in.

“You are talking about can Liverpool continually do it (play at a high-level of intensity),” said Carragher. “Well, they can if they get fresher younger players.

“The problem is that they have a lot of older players. Jame Milner is playing in Liverpool’s midfield at 36. That’s happened at least three or four times this season.

“It’s not a criticism of him, that’s a criticism of the club. Liverpool should not be in a position where James Milner is playing in midfield at 36.”

LIVERPOOL’S MIDFIELD WOES

There have been many problems Liverpool have had to face this season and their lack of bite in the middle park is one of them.

Klopp went from making it clear that the club wouldn’t add a midfielder to their squad during the 2022 summer transfer market to pushing for Arthur’s signature on deadline day.

That’s clearly a short-term fix, but it will be interesting what changes are made in the long-term.

The name that is on everybody’s lips is Jude Bellingham, the sought-after Dortmund teenager, if the Reds manage to secure his signature, then their fans will be dancing on the streets because he is exactly what they need.
