‘Cristiano Ronaldo is better than Maradona’

Arsenal fan Piers Morgan has rated Manchester United’s former number seven as better than Diego Maradona. Really?

Lionel Messi beat Gerd Muller’s 85-goal calendar year record last night, which had stood for 40 years, thanks to a brace against Real Betis taking his total for the year to 86.

With three games to go too, debate is raging on as to whether Messi is the greatest of all time.

One player desperate to usurp him from simply being the best footballer of 2012 is Cristiano Ronaldo, with the Ballon d’Or to be announced later this month.

Ronaldo has had a great year too, leading Real Madrid to the La Liga title, ending last season with 60 goals in 55 games and has 21 in 23 so far this season.

Self-proclaimed football seer Piers Morgan claimed last night that Ronaldo is a better player than Diego Maradona ever was.

Controversial? You bet. Maradona of course led Argentina to the 1986 World Cup and scored some of the best solo goals ever scored, also inspiring unfancied Napoli to two Serie A titles in 1986/87 and 1989/90.

Is Ronaldo better than he was? You tell us.

What we can tell you though is the closest Maradona got to scoring 60 in a season in Europe was the 23 he scored for Barcelona in 1982/83, and the most in a campaign was 43 with Argentinos in his homeland two years earlier.

What do you think? Is Maradona still the best? Give us your top 10 of all time…
