Gamboa endured a frustrating campaign at Celtic during 2017-18.
Celtic defender Cristian Gamboa has suggested to the club’s official website that he could remain at Parkhead beyond the summer transfer window – despite previously stating that he would consider his future after the World Cup.
The 28-year-old is set to jet off to Russia this week after being included in Costa Rica’s World Cup squad, despite playing only three games for Celtic during the 2017-18 campaign.
He told the Daily Record last month that he will make a decision on his future after this summer’s tournament: “I need to look at the situation after the World Cup.”
But now, the former West Bromwich Albion and Rosenborg defender could remain in Glasgow, despite being way down the pecking order under Brendan Rodgers.
““Every time I get a chance to play for Celtic, I feel I do well, so I know how important it is to always being prepared,” Gamboa said.
“I want to perform for the national team. It’s always a goal of mine to go to the World Cup which and it is such a big achievement to play in one. Right now, I just want to play, be fit and be ready for the national team and for Celtic when the season starts.”
Gamboa was forced to watch from the sidelines as Rodgers remained loyal to Sweden international Mikael Lustig throughout the 2017-18 campaign. James Forrest and Jack Hendry were also preferred at right-back to Gamboa.
The 62-time international has just a year remaining on his current contract, which the Daily Star claim is worth £15,000 a week. But he could now remain at Celtic, unless the club have different ideas.
