Gary Neville has paid ‘credit’ to the Leeds United fans for the support they showed towards their team at Elland Road yesterday, as he told Sky Sports in stoppage-time during his commentary stint.

As the game was ticking towards the full-time whistle, the Leeds fans didn’t stop singing ‘we all love Leeds’ as their team was on the end of a 4-1 mauling at the hands of Arsenal.

In truth, throughout the game, the Elland Road faithful were well behind their team, but the players just couldn’t deliver the goods out on the pitch.

Just like their 7-0 thrashing at Manchester City last time out, this could have been a not so dissimilar result for the Whites, as Mikel Arteta’s side missed a number of guild-edge chances during the game.

Injuries to a number of key players is hurting Leeds and their man-to-man marking style isn’t helping their cause either.

Whilst questions remain of the team out on that field of play, it’s a different story in the stands, whether they are at home or on the road.

Usually, towards the end of the game, fans are heading for the exit door, but when the Leeds fans were up on their feet and supporting their side, Neville couldn’t help but praise their efforts.

“It’s a big show of support from these Leeds fans,” said Neville. “These last two games are 11-1 against.

“Fair play. Credit to them. They could have easily have become despondent in this ground tonight.

They haven’t. Their team have taken a bit of a mauling. They got a bit of hope when they got that goal back. But it could have been a lot more than four.

In truth, Leeds fans have been through a lot worse, so this is nothing compared to getting relegation whilst in financial ruin or ending up in England’s third-tier.

Even back then, the Leeds faithful travelled and supported their team in numbers, so it’s no surprise that they are in such an uplifting mood now.

But they can’t continue taking such beatings and conceding so many goals because they will only end up down one road.

Injuries to such key players isn’t helping their cause, but it will be interesting if Marcelo Bielsa, who likes to work with a small squad, will now dip into the January window and bulk up the team.
