Jason McAteer has labelled Chelsea’s transfer spend under new owner Todd Boehly as ‘crazy’, whilst Andy Gray has used Everton as an example and how it ‘doesn’t guarantee’ success, as they told beIN SPORTS.

For years and years, Everton, under various managers, have splashed the cash for fun, only to go backwards and now find themselves in another relegation fight.

Frank Lampard is under huge pressure, as a result, and there is now talk that he has been sacked and a number of replacements have been lined up.

Graham Potter, even though he joined Chelsea midway through the season, is facing the same fire, but that hasn’t stopped the London club from continuing to spend money for fun.

From Mykhailo Mudryk to Joao Felix, the players continue to walk through the doors, but it still doesn’t seem as though they will secure a much-needed Champions League finish this season.

Nonetheless, Chelsea and Everton’s situations were touched upon by former Liverpool midfielder, Jason McAteer and Everton legend, Andy Gray.

“They (Chelsea) have spent more money this window than the other four leagues in Europe,” said McAteer. “It’s crazy.”

Andy Gray added: “We talk about Everton. They have spent £700 million and look where they are, so that (spending money) doesn’t guarantee it.

“But if you are Chelsea, and you are outlaying that amount of money, then you have to guarantee winning football matches, that’s the one thing you do have to guarantee.

“You can’t just say ‘there are no green shoots’. His (Graham Potter’s) job is green shoots. His job is to show that there is an improvement on a weekly basis, maybe not on a monthly basis. He’s only been in a little while. I am yet to understand what he’s trying to do. He’s made too many changes, for me, to get any sort of rhythm going in his team.

“70+ it might be now. That’s never going to get you any continuity in your team. It’s just going to cause you more problems than it is to solve answers.”

LAMPARD FACING THE SACK AGAIN?

Things have continued to go downhill for Lampard ever since Chelsea sacked their legendary player in January 2021 because he could be getting yet another P45.

Everton are sitting in the Premier League’s relegation zone and their latest defeat – to fellow strugglers against West Ham United on Saturday – has just piled on the pressure.

There is talk that Lampard has been booted out of the door by the powers that be at Goodison Park, if and when it does happen, then it will only further affect his chances of managing in the Premier League again.
