Ex-Leicester City boss Craig Shakespeare has told Sky Sports that the Foxes had to fight off Tottenham Hotspur’s bid for winger Demarai Gray in 2017.
Gray, 22, joined Leicester from Birmingham City in January 2016, arriving as one of the Football League’s top talents having impressed at St Andrews.
The winger has now racked up almost 150 appearances for Leicester, but has only notched 10 goals for the Foxes, whilst only picking up six assists too.
Gray’s lack of productivity means that he’s falling behind Harvey Barnes in the Leicester pecking order, and whilst he promises so much, he needs to put his game together.
Gray now faces a huge summer, as he will play for England’s Under-21’s, an he needs to really show that he can play a starring role for Brendan Rodgers next season.
Now, ex-Leicester boss Shakespeare has commented on Gray, revealing that Leicester had to fight off bids from both Tottenham Hotspur and Bournemouth in 2017 as they were determined to keep him at the King Power Stadium.
Back then, Spurs may have been gutted not to add a speedy attacker to their ranks, as he looked to have a huge future in the Premier League – but Mauricio Pochettino won’t be gutted now.
Yes, he may have helped Gray’s development, but he just hasn’t kicked on as expected, and as his role at Leicester comes under question, Tottenham maybe won’t feel they’ve missed out as things stand.
