Craig Samson has opened up on the incident involving Rangers winger Daniel Candeias.

Candeias received a late red card in Rangers’ 2-0 win away to St Mirren on Saturday, having opened the scoring after 82 minutes.

The Portuguese was given a second yellow card by referee Willie Collum shortly after Alfredo Morelos’s injury-time goal in a decision which Gers boss Steven Gerrard labelled as an “embarrassment”.

It followed a brief exchange with defender Anton Ferdinand, and Saints goalkeeper Samson says that the 30-year-old – who celebrated his opener with the travelling Rangers fans – showed a lack of class.

He told The Record: “I was asking him to stop being so disrespectful. When they scored the second goal he ran past and gave Anton a bit of stick, telling him to ‘shoosh’ and blowing him kisses.

“When he ran past me I just grabbed him and said, ‘Look, there’s no need to be so disrespectful. You’ve won the game so just go and celebrate with your team-mates.’

“He agreed with me and apologised, but Anton wasn’t very happy. I don’t know what happened between the two of them but I thought Candeias was lacking a wee bit of class in what he was doing.

“He scored from a cross and then he celebrated the second goal like that. It was a bit disappointing.”

Rangers cannot appeal the dismissal because it was two bookings, and Gerrard will be without his goalscorer for one game.

The suspension gives Eros Grezda another chance to impress, having fluffed his lines on what was his full Premiership debut against the Buddies.

It was Grezda who made way for Candeias on 55 minutes, but Gerrard will need the Bosnian, whose performance he defended at full time.

Gerrard’s side, who sit third in the Scottish Premiership, now turn their attentions toward Europe ahead of Thursday’s clash away to Spartak Moscow.
