Celtic signed Australian teenager Leo Mazis back in February.
Former Rangers captain Craig Moore has told The Scottish Sun that he finds Celtic’s deal for Australian teenager Leo Mazis somewhat peculiar.
Celtic have enjoyed great success with playmaker Tom Rogic, a 2013 signing from Australian side Central Coast Mariners, and decided to try and repeat the trick in February.
After a successful trial spell, Australian teenager Leo Mazis – then of Belconnen United – penned a three-year deal with Celtic, joining the club’s youth setup.
Mazis, 17, was playing in Canberra’s National Premier League, but is now looking to carve out a career with Celtic over the coming years and hopefully emulate compatriot Rogic.
Also an attacking midfielder, Mazis doesn’t have to look far for inspiration given Rogic’s success, but one former Rangers player finds the deal somewhat strange.
Ex-Rangers captain Craig Moore was an Australian international and recently director of football for Brisbane Roar, but has told The Scottish Sun that he doesn’t really know anything about Mazis.
Moore noted that he finds it hard to believe that Mazis is good enough for Celtic having played at a low level in Australia, even suggesting that his signature could merely be a marketing ploy from Celtic to strengthen their brand down under.
“I know very little of [Mazis] from Canberra and find it hard that to believe he would be at a level if they were playing state league back here,” said Moore. “I have not seen him, though. It could purely be a marketing ploy from Celtic,” he added.
