Celtic goalkeeper Craig Gordon has commented on the club’s transfer plans.
Celtic goalkeeper Craig Gordon has told The Scottish Sun that he thinks Brendan Rodgers will be keen to sign players in January – and urged his teammates to make sure they aren’t replaced.
The Bhoys travelled to Edinburgh on Sunday afternoon to take on Hibernian, but turned in a dismal display as Vykintas Slivka and Florian Kamberi scored to give Hibs a 2-0 win.
The fallout from that defeat at Easter Road has seen many urge Rodgers to splash the cash in January, with signings almost certainly needed at Parkhead.
A new striker is certainly needed given Moussa Dembele’s August exit and Leigh Griffiths taking a break from football, and Rodgers may also be in the market for options in defence and out wide.
It remains to be seen just how much Celtic spend after a frustrating summer transfer window, but the calls for strong recruitment are growing louder and louder.
Now, goalkeeper Gordon has suggested that his teammates need to step up and ensure that they remain in Rodgers’ plans moving forward, as they are at risk of being replaced if they continue to struggle.
Gordon added that he does think Rodgers will be keen on making new signings next month, and whilst he doesn’t know how busy the Celtic boss will be, the onus lies with the current squad to prove that he doesn’t need many arrivals.
“It’s up to the manager to decide what he wants in his squad and the positions we have to improve,” said Gordon. “The guys who are here have to step up and make sure they are in the manager’s plans, especially leading up to January. It’s up to us to make sure our performances are good.”
“At a club this big, if your performances are not up to scratch for a period of time then you can get replaced. We have to make sure we work hard enough to stay in the team and deliver the results the manager, the club and the fans want.”
“Do I expect him to be busy in January? I don’t know, I don’t know what his plans to bring players in are. I think he will want to do that but we will have to wait and see what happens when that time comes. We’ll see who comes in and who goes,” he added.
