Dedryck Boyata’s future at Celtic is very much up in the air.
Craig Gordon has told The Record that he thinks want-away Celtic defender Dedryck Boyata might have sent a message to the team’s group chat in Whatsapp.
The 27-year-old looks likely to leave Celtic in the near future after reportedly refusing to play for the Hoops in Tuesday’s defeat by AEK Athens in the Champions League qualifiers.
In his post-match interview, manager Brendan Rodgers slammed the Belgium international, who impressed for his country for at the World Cup in Russia earlier this summer.
The former Manchester City youth himself suggested through Instagram on the morning of the game that injury was the reason behind his absence, but wished his team-mates the best of luck.
There seem to be a lot of conflicting reports at the moment, but Gordon does not want to be involved in the saga one bit.
He told The Record: “We were just concentrating on the game, the guys who were here, and what we had to do to try to win. It was always going to be a difficult game having not been able to get the second goal last week.
“We knew what we had to do. Everything else that goes on behind the scenes is not really taken into account when the boys are focused on a game.
“He might have put something on the group app. I’m not entirely sure. He certainly had an Instagram post in the morning of the game. It said he would be watching for our result.
“But it was up to the guys who were out there to go out and get something from the game to ensure we got through. We weren’t capable of that and that was very disappointing.”
It remains to be seen whether Boyata really is trying to force a move away from Parkhead, but it seems intent to leave irrespective of how he achieves the exit so perhaps it does not really matter. Celtic will still need an excellent replacement nevertheless, such is his importance to the team.
