Craig Gordon comments on Allan McGregor’s Rangers return

Glasgow Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor has returned to Ibrox six years after his initial departure.

In comments reported by the Daily Record, Craig Gordon has suggested that Allan McGregor’s move back to Rangers could boost the stopper’s hopes of becoming a more prominent fixture in the Scotland side.

McGregor became Rangers’ second signing of the summer as he followed Scott Arfield through the Ibrox door six years after he initially left the club.

The 36-year-old may perhaps not only be looking to help Rangers get back to the top of the Scottish Premiership, but the stopper may also be looking to earn one final prolonged run as Scotland’s number one. And Gordon seemed to suggest that McGregor’s move to Ibrox certainly gives him the platform to challenge to become the country’s first-choice once again.

“Allan signing for Rangers puts him in the public eye a bit more,” he said, as reported by the Daily Record. “In the bottom half of the English Championship, nothing much really gets reported up here.

“Whether he had a good or bad game, nobody would really notice. Up here, there will be more scrutiny, either good or bad. People will look at him.”

It would appear that there may be something in Gordon’s assessment. The last year in which McGregor earned more than two caps was 2013, the year after he left Rangers originally. He has earned just seven caps in the last five years.

With Steven Gerrard boasting a talented pool of goalkeepers to pick from, McGregor earning the number one spot with the Gers and then perhaps helping the club put a title challenge together would be a fantastic way for the stopper to stake a claim to Alex McLeish.

And with Wes Foderingham and Jak Alnwick both very talented goalkeepers, McGregor will have all the motivation he could possibly need to avoid complacency should he get the nod from Gerrard to be the club’s number one next season.
