Craig Gordon will be dropped by Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers for Sunday’s League Cup final.
Craig Gordon has told BBC Sport that he would have loved if Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers started him in Sunday’s League Cup final with Aberdeen, but admitted that he had faith in Scott Bain’s ability.
Celtic go to Hampden this weekend in search of a seventh successive trophy under Rodgers, who masterminded back-to-back trebles in his first two years in Glasgow.
Gordon has played a major role in the Hoops’ success of recent years but he will not play a part on Sunday, with the Northern Irish manager confirming that Bain – who has started the previous rounds – will be given the nod over him.
It’s a decision which the veteran Scot wishes was different, but the former Sunderland keeper is confident that his understudy will handle the occasion well.
He told BBC Sport: “Obviously I’d rather be playing but that’s the same with every member of this squad.
“He has given Scott every other round and he has decided to stick by him for this one. That is the way it goes. Sometimes managers do change for the final, and sometimes they don’t.
“Scott is a very good goalkeeper. It will be a new thing for him to go out and play in that game. But certainly from everything I have seen, he is very capable of handling that and performing well.”
It’s certainly a noble decision by Rodgers, but nobility is a questionable quality if one of the repercussions is losing a cup final.
Celtic fans won’t be happy if a mistake from Bain leads to the Dons pulling off a surprise victory, but if Rodgers trust his goalkeeper’s talent then who can say any different?
