The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder has struggled with form and fitness this season.
ESPN pundit Craig Burley suggested that Tottenham have real problems in the heart of midfield, highlighting how Victor Wanyama’s lack of mobility really cost the north London outfit against Ajax on Tuesday night.
Spurs currently have numerous key men out injured, including the talismanic Harry Kane, but Burley believes that their problems stretch further than having their main striker unavailable for selection.
The ESPN pundit suggested that central midfield cost Tottenham big time against Ajax, highlighting Victor Wanyama as a particular weak-link in the side, when speaking exclusively to ESPN:
“I think there are bigger issues there and I think that was the middle of the park. There’s no Winks, Wanyama’s not had much game time and he’s got no mobility, Dier’s not had much game time so he didn’t play. Eriksen was off the pace, Dele Alli was off the pace. These were bigger problems, almost bigger problems than not having an out-ball for Son over the top or a natural goalscorer in Harry Kane.”
Tottenham sold Mousa Dembele in January, and it could be argued that Mauricio Pochettino needs to spend big to replace the Belgian in January, if his side are to challenge for major honours over the course of the next few years.
Wanyama is a decent player, but it is highly debatable whether he is good enough for Spurs.
This summer will be vital for Tottenham, and how Pochetitno approaches his player recruitment could end up defining their chances of success over the next few years.
A top class central midfielder will be a priority for Spurs, and that will certainly not come cheap.
