Craig Burley says he would bring back Brendan Rodgers to be Celtic’s next manager over appointing Jesse Marsch to replace Tottenham Hotspur’s new man, Ange Postecoglou.

Celtic are on the lookout for a new coach after Ange Postecoglou decided to take up Tottenham’s offer, with a number of names linked to the role, including a possible return for Brendan Rodgers.

Whilst former Bhoys midfielder Burley admits that it would be ‘difficult to sell’ to the fans for Rodgers to come back in, he would still pick him over Jesse Marsch, as he told ESPN.

Both managers were sacked from their Premier League jobs this season and they both were part of teams that ended up getting relegated to the Championship.

In truth, Rodgers deserves to have Leicester City’s relegation on his CV, whilst Marsch also played a huge part in Leeds United’s decline, which saw them producing some of the worst defensive performances seen by a Premier League team.

But they are free agents now and they have been touted for the Celtic role, with Burley sharing his thoughts.

“I think Brendan Rodgers is a difficult sell for a lot of the fans bearing in mind that he was hugely successful and then left halfway through a season,” said Burley. It is long memories amongst a lot of the fans.

“Jesse Marsch is out there, but he is off the back of a couple of sackings. That’s a difficult sell to. But they thought outside of the box with Postecoglou.

“Which of the two of them? Out of the two, I would take Brendan Rodgers. But I think it’s a difficult sell to the club to take him back.”

Next Celtic manager: Celtic should think outside of the box again

When Postecoglou arrived on Celtic’s doorstep, he took charge of a team that had just conceded the Premiership title to Steven Gerrard’s Rangers.

The Bhoys were in a mess both on and off the field. Many things needed sorting out.

But within a few months, this unknown figure and outside-of-the-box appointment transformed the club to the point that he won the treble, so perhaps, Celtic should go down that road again.
