Sunderland are struggling big time under David Moyes this season.

Craig Burley has joked to ESPN that Sunderland have the best manager in world football in David Moyes.

Sunderland are rock bottom of the Premier League table after failing to win any of their nine league outings under the Scot so far this season.

The Black Cats also have only two points, and five points separate them from safety at the moment.

It is not looking good for Moyes, who was named as Sam Allardyce’s successor in the summer and he risks being sacked from his third job in as many years following failed spells at Manchester United and Real Sociedad.

The 53-year-old’s stock was very high a little over three years ago, after a wonderful 11-year spell as Everton manager earned him the United job, but it has been going steeply downhill for the man since that.

And Burley has suggested that Sunderland is not the ideal place to rebuild his shattered reputation.

Asked by ESPN who he thinks the best manager in the world is, Burley responded: “Moyes. He’s having a torrid time, isn’t he. I mean, he’s struggling god bless him, and he’s got to rebuild his brand and Sunderland isn’t the place.”

Sunderland’s season could get even worse tomorrow as Moyes’s side visit Southampton in a fourth-round League Cup clash. Victory would take them into the quarter-finals and perhaps help them turn this elusive corner, but defeat could be another nail in the Scot’s coffin.
