Tottenham Hotspur must improve on the trophy front, says Craig Burley.

Mauricio Pochettino, manager of Spurs looks on prior to the Pre-Season Friendly match beween Tottenham Hotspur and Juventus at Wembley Stadium on August 5, 2017 in London, England.

Craig Burley has told ESPN that it is time for Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino to deliver big trophies and stop “hiding behind” the promise of a glorious future for the club.

Tottenham finshed second behind Premier League champions Chelsea last season, with the Blues also knocking Pochettino’s side out of the FA Cup at the semi-final stage.

It was also a “horrible” European campaign according to Burley after Spurs were eliminated from the Champions League at the group stage, before bowing out of the Europa League at the last-32 phase in February.

The Argentine manager has been at Tottenham since 2014 and they haven’t come all that close to winning anything except the League Cup, where they were beaten by Chelsea in the final two years ago.

They finished 11 points behind Leicester City in 2016, and seven adrift of Antonio Conte’s side last term, and Burley believes it’s time for the Lilywhites boss to start fulfilling some of the potential that his Tottenham charges have shown in recent years.

He told ESPN: “He [Pochettino] has to start proving that he can get the job done. They finished second last year which was okay. The year before, they only had to beat Leicester to win the league and they couldn’t even do that.

“They got beat in the FA Cup semi-final, horrible in the Champions League and were knocked out of the Europa League. This club has to start doing things, stop hiding behind the new stadium and stop hiding behind [the theory] that success is just around the corner.”
