Craig Burley has told ESPN he is surprised Ante Postecoglou decided to quit Australia.
Postecoglou has been linked with the vacant Rangers post – with ESPN reporting last week he was interested in replacing Pedro Caixinha at Ibrox.
Postecoglou has ambitions to manage in Europe, and Burley suspects his resignation is not based on Australia.
Australia recently qualified for the World Cup after a testing campaign against Asia’s best.
Burley told ESPN: “There has to be something else.
“You’ve done all the hard work to get them there. Go and enjoy the World Cup.”
Bookies have subsequently slashed odds on Postecoglou taking the Rangers job.
Rangers fired Pedro Caixinha last month and have made slow progress in terms of appointing a successor, with the board offering no clues whether they are looking for another foreign coach or a British manager.
Rangers have had a poor start to the season, and lost to Hamilton Academical at the weekend in a surprise 2-0 defeat.
Graeme Murty has been holding the fort but it has become clear he should not be the long term option.
