Rangers brought winger Jamie Murphy to Ibrox last month.
Former Scotland boss Craig Brown has told the Daily Mail that he thinks new Rangers signing Jamie Murphy is good enough to be in the Scottish national team under Alex McLeish.
Murphy, 28, was a key part of the Brighton and Hove Albion side which won promotion to the Premier League under Chris Hughton last season, but found first-team football hard to come by in the top flight.
The Seagulls were willing to let Murphy go in January, and whilst they received other offers, they allowed the winger to return to his native Scotland in order to sign for boyhood club Rangers.
Graeme Murty has immediately made Murphy a key part of his Rangers side, and he showed his quality with an outstanding performance in the 5-3 away win over Hamilton Academical on Sunday afternoon.
Murphy tallied a goal and two assists in a superb display, with his incisive runs and clinical end product proving too hot to handle for the Hamilton back line at New Douglas Park.
Murphy has been receiving plaudits from Rangers fans throughout the week since that display, and one former Scotland boss has backed the wide man’s ambitions of becoming a Scotland international.
Craig Brown – who managed Murphy at Motherwell – has told the Daily Mail that he is far from surprised to see Murphy impressing for Rangers, having seen him show his deceptive quickness and finishing ability during his ‘outstanding’ time at Motherwell.
Brown added that whilst new Scotland boss Alex McLeish, formerly of Rangers, won’t want to be told who to pick in his squads, he thinks Murphy is certainly good enough to break into the Scotland side despite the presence of other wingers such as Matt Phillips, Matt Ritchie, Robert Snodgrass, Ikechi Anya, Ryan Fraser, Oliver Burke and James Forrest.
“I’m not surprised to see Jamie doing so well for Rangers,” said Brown. “He was outstanding for me at Motherwell. I’ve got the same high regard for his abilities as a footballer. He is deceptively quick and he knows how to finish.”
“I know from my time as Scotland manager that you don’t like being told which players to pick. But if you are asking me if Jamie Murphy is good enough to play for Scotland, then the answer is absolutely yes. If there are better players out there for Scotland than Jamie then we will have an excellent team,” he added.
