Both Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City booked their places in the knockout stages of the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Craig Bellamy has told The Debate on Sky Sports (broadcast on 1st November 2017 from 22:00) that Manchester City’s Champions League result against Napoli was more impressive than Tottenham’s against Real Madrid on Wednesday night.

The two Premier League sides booked their places in the knockout stages of Europe’s main competition this week, with City claiming a 4-2 win in Italy while Spurs beat Madrid 3-1 at Wembley.

Both results will live long in the memory for Tottenham and Manchester City fans, but Bellamy has suggested that Napoli’s form makes City’s result the more impressive when asked to pick between the two.

“It sounds crazy because it’s Real Madrid and they haven’t lost a group game in five years, but I felt that if Man City went to Naples and won, it’s a big win,” he told The Debate on Sky Sports (broadcast on 1st November 2017 from 22:00) when asked what was the more impressive result.

“Just the form Napoli are in in this present moment – Real Madrid are not in great form – but just the form Napoli are in and the way they’ve been playing at this present moment, if Man City go there and win, it’s incredible.”

Tottenham’s result is undoubtedly a spectacular one given the calibre of the players within the Madrid squad, but it is probably no surprise that Bellamy opted for the City result.

Going to Stadio San Paolo is a daunting trip at the best of times, but with Napoli unbeaten domestically, and at home in all competitions, this season, City’s task was always going to be incredibly difficult.

But Madrid suffering only their third defeat of the season at Wembley, nothing can be taken away from what Tottenham achieved as they booked their place in the next stage also.
