Craig Bellamy asked if Tottenham can go far in Champions League

Tottenham Hotspur are currently unbeaten in their Champions League group, and Craig Bellamy has backed the Premier League side to go far.

Craig Bellamy has told The Debate on Sky Sports (broadcast on 18th October 2017 from 10:00 pm) that the way that Tottenham usually hit another gear in the second-half of the season makes him believe that they can go a long way in this season’s Champions League.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men are currently in a great position to secure a place in the knockout stages of the competition, having won two and drawn one of their opening three games, including an incredibly impressive 1-1 draw in the Bernabeu against Real Madrid on Tuesday night.

They currently sit six points clear of the bottom two sides in the group with three games to go, so are arguably in a fantastic position to qualify out of what appeared, on paper, to be one of the toughest groups in this year’s competition.

And Bellamy suggested that because Tottenham tend to go from strength to strength as the campaign moves on, they could be a contender.

“I’ve been a big fan of Tottenham now for the last two, three seasons. The team are progressing, the team are getting better, but so is Pochettino. He’s getting better as a manager, with the experience of the Champions League last year,” he told The Debate when asked whether Spurs can go a long way in this year’s competition.

“They look better in the Champions League, they’re going to be strong, they’re going to be there or thereabouts in the league again this year. I definitely feel that [because of] the way they come on strong second-half of the season.

“If they can get through this group stage, and with them in the second-half of the season – usually, they come into form – I can see if they get to the knockout stages, they’d be a difficult team to beat over two legs.”

If Tottenham do manage to go a long way in the competition and balance it with a strong league showing, it would undoubtedly be further proof that Pochettino is still managing to find new levels with the team, and that should arguably give them a stronger hand when it comes to trying to keep their best players in future and trying to bring some of Europe’s best into the club.
