The Burnley playmaker is a long-standing Celtic target.

Celtic have a chance to end their eight-year pursuit of Burnley’s George Boyd this summer, after the Clarets’ midfielder turned down a new contract (Daily Mail).

The tireless 31-year-old has excelled for Sean Dyche’s side this season and will be a bargain for someone should the Mail’s report prove accurate.

But with Patrick Roberts’ future unlikely to be decided until the latter part of the summer window, Celtic should ensure they are the beneficiaries.

Though alleged interest from Premier League and Championship clubs could threaten any Bhoys move, should one manifest, the Scottish champions’ long-standing interest may count for something.

Gordon Strachan (2009, Record) and Neil Lennon (2013, Mail) have both been drawn to Boyd’s talent while in charge at Celtic Park and Brendan Rodgers would be foolish not to follow their lead, especially with no fee involved.

While he is not getting any younger, Boyd’s status as one of the Premier League’s longest distance runners this season suggests no imminent decline.

And the fact he has spent much of the campaign on the right of midfield, but is equally capable on the left or through the middle, should only add to the attraction.

Should Celtic go for Boyd when his Burnley contract expires?
