Pep Guardiola admits that Manchester City ‘could not control’ Liverpool’s two full-backs early on at Anfield yesterday, as per his comments to Sky Sports.
City eventually ran out 4-1 winners over Liverpool, as they put in a commanding display on Merseyside.
However, it was actually the Reds who started the contest in better form.
Although Liverpool didn’t create too many openings, they were the team looking more likely to score early on.
And Guardiola admits that he had to make changes due to the problems that Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson were causing.
He said: “After the first 20 minutes where we could not control the width of Robertson and Alexander-Arnold we adjusted our set-up and after the quality of our players did the rest.”
It is true that Alexander-Arnold started brightly in the contest, but after the changes were made he struggled.
Raheem Sterling caused him all sorts of problems after City stopped the Liverpool full-back getting forward at will.
In the end City picked up a highly impressive three points, with a statement victory.

The win means that City now built up a 10 point lead over Liverpool, with Jurgen Klopp’s side’s hopes of retaining the title surely over.
City scored their goals through a brace from Ilkay Gundagon, and strikes from Sterling and Phil Foden.
