Paul Merson has praised Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho for ‘see things others don’t’ in regards to the signings of Matt Doherty and Pierre Emile Højbjerg this summer, as he told Sky Sports.

The outspoken TV pundit also claimed that he ‘couldn’t believe’ Wolves let Doherty go in the summer for the price that they sold him for and also thinks Hojbjerg was a played ‘needed’ in the middle of the park for Spurs.

From the two, it is perhaps Hojbjerg who has made the most impressive and eye-catching start, with Doherty being in and out of the starting XI.

Nonetheless, Merson labelled Mourinho ‘special’ for managing to secure the services of the above duo this summer.

“This is where Mourinho is special,” said Merson. “He sees things others don’t. He sees what he needs, and he doesn’t just go out and buy players for the sake of it.

“In Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, they needed that ball-winning midfielder to break things up and then there are the full-backs.

“I couldn’t believe Wolves let Matt Doherty go. For the price Wolves let him go for, I didn’t get that one at all.”

The key thing both Doherty and Hojbjerg have brought to Spurs is some much-needed depth and now Mourinho has strong competition within the squad.

Like Mourinho has proven in the Europa League, if he’s not happy with a select group of players then he will haul them off and play his more reliable players.

All in all, the main aim is to lift a trophy at the end of the season, with the Premier League title being the most ambitious of the lot.

Under the stewardship of someone like Mourinho, who has had a trophy-laden career, added with Tottenham’s firepower up top, it makes them very dangerous contenders.
