Tottenham Hotspur right-back Matt Doherty has expressed his shock on the club’s official website at reported Spurs target Diogo Costa’s mistake for Portugal against Ghana at the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

Costa, linked with a move to Antonio Conte’s Tottenham and Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United, was in action for Portugal in their opening game at the World Cup against Ghana on Thursday.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored for the European side, as they won 3-2.

However, Portugal could have easily conceded a late equaliser.

Costa rolled the ball on the ground without realising that Ghana star Inaki Williams was behind him.

Had Williams not slipped, then he would have scored.

It was one of the worst mistakes from a goalkeeper at the 2022 Qatar World Cup so far, and Tottenham right-back Doherty was shocked.

Interestingly, Costa is a goalkeeper that Tottenham are looking at signing as a potential long-term successor to Hugo Lloris.

Earlier this week, 90min reported that Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur are competing with Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United for FC Porto and Portugal international goalkeeper Costa.

Tottenham have scouted Costa and have impressed by the Portuguese star.

Manchester United are also reported to be interested in the 23-year-old and have been ‘enamoured’ by him.

Doherty wrote: “I thought Portugal were sloppy conceding the second goal (89 minutes), maybe they felt the game was over at 3-1, and then right at the end!

“I couldn’t believe that (Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa rolled the ball on the ball to clear in his area, without realising Inaki Williams was behind him, but he slipped as he got to the ball) and if Williams doesn’t slip it looks a definite goal.”
