Glasgow Rangers loanee Jason Cummings arguably needs to step up in the coming weeks.
Most Rangers fans may have hoped when the club confirmed in January that they had signed Jason Cummings on loan that the Gers would show little hesitation in taking up the option to make the deal permanent, as it appeared to be a brilliant piece of business.
The Daily Record has recently reported that he will cost just £1 million at the end of the campaign if the Light Blues decide to sign him from Nottingham Forest on a permanent basis. But based on how he has started his time at Ibrox, it does not seem particularly obvious as to what decision Rangers will come to regarding Cummings’ future.
The 22-year-old has enjoyed some bright moments, but has not exactly been prolific and has struggled to move ahead of an out of form Alfredo Morelos in the pecking order, with just one league goal coming so far.
Right now, opinion on whether to keep Cummings may be divided. But perhaps a piece of injury news concerning Josh Windass may hand the loanee the kind of chance that he desperately needs to prove a point to the Gers hierarchy.
The Scottish Sun has recently suggested that the 24-year-old is a doubt for the Scottish Cup semi-final with Celtic after picking up an injury against Motherwell, and Cummings surely has to be considered when Murty thinks about who could replace him if required.
The forward’s best performance for the Gers to date came when he played just off the striker in the cup tie with Falkirk and bagged a hat-trick, and he should now be looking to prove that he can build on that display if he is given the nod in Windass’ absence.
If he does replace the Englishman, an Old Firm semi-final is undoubtedly the kind of stage where one performance could make the club’s mind up regarding Cummings’ future if he makes an impact that he is more than capable of making, so perhaps Windass’ setback is the kind of disguised blessing the striker needed.
