West Ham United are reportedly interested in signing Gary Cahill from Chelsea during the January transfer window.
Cahill appears to be coming towards the end of his time at Stamford Bridge with his contract expiring at the end of the season. The Mirror reports that he could move on sooner, and West Ham are apparently considering a bid in January.
Cahill would arguably be a very smart signing for the Irons if they are able to get a deal done. He has not only been one of the Premier League’s best for a number of years, but his leadership would be beneficial as Manuel Pellegrini’s men continue to gel as a team following a very eventful summer.
But given the boxes that he would tick, it could perhaps be argued that Cahill’s potential arrival at the London Stadium would have an impact on Winston Reid’s Hammers career.
Reid – who earns £70,000-a-week, according to Spotrac – is yet to feature for the Irons this season after undergoing surgery in the summer. Unfortunately for the defender, his absence has perhaps not been felt too much with Fabian Balbuena and Issa Diop starting to form a very promising partnership.
Angelo Ogbonna can provide cover for the pair, while the likes of Declan Rice and Reece Oxford could come into contention if required. With Cahill potentially added into the mix, Reid could face an incredibly difficult task trying to force his way back into the side.
With injuries meaning that he has made more than 30 Premier League appearances in a season just once since joining the Irons, Pellegrini may have concerns regarding whether he can rely on the New Zealand international.
Reid has been a fantastic servant and it is fitting that he scored the final ever competitive goal at Upton Park. But if he cannot force his way back into the picture by January, Cahill joining the club would surely leave a major question mark lingering over his future.
