West Bromwich Albion were also said to be in for Fonte, who looks set to join West Ham United.
West Bromwich Albion have been beaten to the signing of Southampton defender Jose Fonte by West Ham United, according to the Daily Mirror.
But Fonte isn’t the only centre-back linked with the Baggies this month, with the names Barnsley’s Marc Roberts and Swansea’s Federico Fernandez also mooted.
One player they haven’t been credited with an interest in, however, is Everton captain Phil Jagielka, whose manager admits he could be sold after falling out of favour at Goodison Park.

It would therefore be little surprise to see West Brom’s name formally associated with that of Jagielka as we enter the final few days of the January transfer window.
Though he may be 34, Jagielka is only two years Fonte’s senior, and with 18 months left on his Everton deal, he’s a potential bargain for someone – with West Ham and Sunderland reportedly showing an interest (Daily Mail).
Let’s not forget the Mancunian was an England squad regular until the middle of last year and his 316 Premier League appearances are certainly not to be sniffed it.

One to keep an eye on, perhaps?
