The West Bromwich Albion teenager impressed for the under-23s last season and looks primed for the step up.

West Bromwich Albion made some fine additions to their squad this summer, but that does not mean manager Tony Pulis should ignore the academy when it comes to potential breakout stars.
One such player is 18-year-old full-back Max Melbourne, who impressed for the Baggies’ under-23s last season and has the stature and innate talent to ultimately excel at The Hawthorns.

Predominantly a left-back but able to operate on the opposite flank when required, Melbourne will be eying a potential first-team debut this season and the upcoming EFL Cup clash against Manchester City could be the ideal chance to see what he can do.
The prospect of West Brom throwing an unproven teenage defender in from kick off against one of the best attacking sides in the country is unlikely. However, a place on the bench is not beyond the realms of possibility for a player who will know that every chance – no matter how small – is one to seize with both hands.

Melbourne could follow the likes of Sam Field and Jonathan Leko in getting first-team opportunities and, with West Brom flying high in the Premier League, the EFL Cup could be his one real chance of doing that.
Pulis will only make such a selection when he feels the player is ready, but based on pre-season performances and his standout showings for the under-23s in the past, Melbourne could be next in line when that decision is finally made.
