According to a recent report from Calcio Mercato, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Hakim Ziyech from Ajax this summer, but that could be very bad news for Marcus Edwards.

The Tottenham youngster was widely expected to be in the first-team by now but, despite his undeniable talent, the 19-year-old is seemingly no closer to a breakthrough.

In fact, he may be further away than he was last summer, after a failed loan move to Norwich City and questions over his attitude raised during that brief stint at Carrow Road.

Not long ago, Edwards was hailed as the jewel in Tottenham’s academy crown, but just a few years on some Spurs fans are wondering if he will ultimately be remembered as another wasted talent.

Given his age and his contract situation there is still plenty of time for Edwards to get things right in North London, yet rumours linking Tottenham with another creative midfielder do not bode well for a teenager whose path to the senior side is already full of obstacles.

Ziyech scored nine goals and provided 18 assists for Ajax this season and, at 25, he could be the perfect age to sign for Tottenham and add even more magic to a midfield already containing Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli.

With all three players in their early or mid-twenties, the prospect of Edwards making his mark either on the right wing or as an attacking midfielder seems slim to say the least and, while Tottenham would have to sign Ziyech for that to be a problem, one wonders what the future holds for the talented teen.

While the likes of Kyle Walker-Peters and Harry Winks have been granted chances and Josh Onomah did well on loan at Aston Villa, Edwards is floundering, and every new addition to this already impressive Tottenham team is going to make his challenge more difficult.
