Eric Dier would’ve been a candidate to step into central defence to replace Vertonghen, if the Belgian is ruled out, but Dembele’s potential absence means that Dier might well be needed alongside Victor Wanyama in midfield.
With that in mind, Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino might be regretting his decision to omit Juan Foyth from the Champions League squad.
The 20-year-old Argentine, who was handed a first call-up for his country this week, is not eligible to face the Primera Division giants and Pochettino may well need him.
The Tottenham boss could simply play a standard back four, with Davinson Sanchez and Toby Alderweireld in central defence, but Foyth, an £8 million signing in 2017, could’ve come in to allow the Lilywhites to keep their three-man defence.
