Tottenham Hotspur are amongst the host of sides keen on signing Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer, according to reports.

It may have caught some Tottenham fans by surprise when TEAMtalk reported that Spurs were one of the sides interested in signing Kristoffer Ajer from Celtic in the summer.

Ajer has been hugely impressive lately, but the 19-year-old has not exactly enjoyed the longest run in the Hoops side and the quality of the Scottish Premiership is often written off by those who forget about some of the fantastic players who have swapped Parkhead for the Premier League in recent years.

Mauricio Pochettino manager

Signing Ajer would be a gamble for Tottenham if they managed to win the race, but Spurs should undoubtedly do all they can to see off competition from the likes of Borussia Dortmund and Southampton as it could prove to be a masterstroke from Mauricio Pochettino.

Though the £500,000 signing – fee reported by TEAMtalk – is still finding his feet at Celtic, the signs are extremely positive. The bar is not exactly high, but he is unquestionably the best performing centre-back in Brendan Rodgers’ squad right now and he has managed that having only really emerged into the side in December.

He was superb in the 1-0 Europa League win over Zenit St Petersburg earlier this season, so can also step up on the big occasion and that will certainly boost his chances of thriving as part of a Tottenham side that is looking to compete in the latter stages on four fronts.

The rate the Norwegian has already developed at is frightening and should encourage Spurs to act swiftly to make sure that they win the race for his signature as he could be the kind of player that Pochettino could still help move up several levels in the coming years.

With Celtic struggling to attract the kind of fees that some Premier League sides get for their top players, signing Ajer has the potential to be a sensational piece of business for whichever club wins the race. It may appear to be a potentially uninspiring deal on paper for Spurs, but based on what he has shown this season, he could prove to be an inspired signing for Pochettino if they manage to get something done.
