Tottenham Hotspur are allegedly prepared to wait until transfer deadline day if it means getting Everton’s Ross Barkley on the cheap.
According to Sky Sports sources, Tottenham Hotspur are prepared to wait in the hope that Everton reduce their asking price for midfielder Ross Barkley, with Spurs said to be willing to watch the saga run all the way to transfer deadline day.
With that in mind, could Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy get it right exactly a year after their ill-fated £30million move for Moussa Sissoko?
That appeared to be a panic buy that came out of nowhere, and the French international has done little to justify his price tag ever since. But with no one likely to touch Barkley for the £50million Everton were initially requesting, could Tottenham replicate their last-minute £30million deal for a player that could actually excel in North London?
With just a year left on his contract, Barkley is not going to command a huge transfer fee, and if Tottenham are patient they could get him for a more reasonable amount 12 months after throwing away the same sum on Sissoko (albeit in smaller installments).
Everton will know that they either sell the 23-year-old this summer or lose him for nothing in a year and the latter is simply inconceivable.
Tottenham are well aware of the situation and Levy can sit back and wait, knowing a late reduced offer will be better than no offer at all.
Last year Tottenham fans were dreaming of a fairy tale ending to deadline day and instead they were stuck with a player they inexplicable snatched from Everton’s grasp.
This time round it could again be the Toffees on the wrong end of a Tottenham deal, but one they do not live to regret.
