Could Tottenham be grateful to Ashley Young in January despite Dele Alli spat?

Dele Alli and Ashley Young’s spat grabbed many of the headlines following Tottenham Hotspur’s clash with Manchester United at the weekend.

One of the most notable moments from Manchester United’s clash with Tottenham at the weekend, apart from the result itself, was the first-half spat between Ashley Young and Dele Alli.

The Sun reports that Alli made a comment regarding Young’s age, while the United ace responded by asking the Spurs ace to let him know when he wins the Premier League title.

Of course, Young will be the villain in many Spurs’ fans eyes. But perhaps it may not be out of the question to suggest that, come January, it could be the 32-year-old who actually hands Mauricio Pochettino a transfer boost.

The Gambling Times recently reported that Tottenham want to sign Luke Shaw from United, and Jose Mourinho is open to the idea of letting him leave, on loan initially.

Shaw once appeared to be the brightest left-back in the country, destined to stamp his authority on a place in one of the best teams in the top flight and on a spot in the England side, and that is perhaps why Pochettino is keen to be reunited with the defender having worked with him previously at Southampton.

He has not been able to realise his full potential at Old Trafford, partially due to injury, but also, more recently, due to the fact that Young’s form on the left has been so impressive lately.

After Young, you would arguably not say that any of Mourinho’s other options deserve to stand ahead of Shaw in the pecking order.

Therefore, while Young may not be the most popular opposition player amongst the Spurs squad at the moment following his spat with Alli, if he continues to maintain his current form and keeps Shaw well away from the first-team, then Pochettino may actually be grateful to him if they manage to land his teammate in January.
